Recent photos from recent Austin things.
A ceremonial dancer at Dragon Boat festivities in Austin shot with the Olympus E-P2 with the recent addition of the 75 to 300mm lens which translates to 150 to 600mm in traditional 35mm film terms. It fit in my pocket which constantly amazes me.

Movie coming attraction is still coming -- still being worked on and refined. I made an impromptu portrait of the group, Mother Falcon, backstage inside the Long Auditorium in Austin after a rehearsal and sound check for the concert scheduled for the next day.

Another picture is of attendees at a retired power station in Austin that regularly hosts music and art events. Another photo at the same place is of someone looking out of a window during a break in a concert with Mother Falcon.

There is a fool-around-outtake photo of Dawn Jones-Garcia in Sendero Photo loft place (the inside secret name of the studio is "Donald's Place" to be announced in the future) after making our official portrait of the three of us. It got interesting because I had left the Olympus cable release at home. Had to use the camera timer which worked fine.

I am fighting a cold from a recent drop in temperature here in Austin. Cooler weather came with the Olympus/Mullen team (Visionary David Wells and Louise Owen) visit. I just assumed that along with doing a splendid job running things here for the event, they would take the cooler weather with them but I was wrong and so I guess that I will just blame

for my cold. The good news is that I will be able to go to Toronto, Canada Sunday as planned -- to participate in a Magnum Workshop and deliver a lecture at Ryerson University for one week. The UT university semester is raging toward the end. Had a great crop of students in my main photography classes.
It includes street action of people not happy with the Bush administration at that time. The music in this multi media is from Johnny Cash's rendition of a song first performed by the group, "Nine Inch Nails. The photos were made with my Olympus DSLR cameras using the 14 to 54mm F2.8/3.5 (In 35mm film terms -- 28 to 108mm) and the 50 to 200mm F2.8/3.5 (In 35mm film terms -- 100 to 400mm) lenses. I also used the 150mm F2 and 300mm F2.8 lenses (In 35mm film terms -- 300mm and 600mm).

This was the second version of this multi media piece. I was asked to give a talk at Samy's Camera in Los Angeles ( I think it was 2008) and I realized that he needed to address certain things so edited it to what you see here.

Eli Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00129836947823232959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563939914405811110.post-51247646896682219242011-04-11T03:38:00.000-07:002011-04-11T09:19:06.096-07:00No day at the beach or park.Spent Sunday working on three projects. One of them was particularly interesting as I repeatedly watched my aerial device repeatedly crash in pursuit of finishing a movie scene finale. After flailing about all night -- I think I have found a solution that will work. We will see by the end of the week if it is possible. Meanwhile here is part of another project in production.Eli Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00129836947823232959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563939914405811110.post-62699598870815074552011-04-10T21:53:00.000-07:002011-04-11T03:35:53.561-07:00Sendero Studio
A note to the interested. Days later, back home in Texas, I felt the change that was coming and felt the wheels of time preparing to engage. In Chicago, though, all of my emotions were buried as I did my work.

I arrived on the Thursday before the election to get a feel for the place and I began taking pictures. I photographed the stillness in the energy of the city as Chicago waited with bated breath. I continued doing my work until just after Election Day. The euphoria and the
wonder of those few days surrounding Obama’s election was a wonderful thing to see.

“I couldn’t stop crying.” I would hear or see this over and over again from one conversation to another with friends who called or text from all over the world. Change is a feisty thing that moves within its own time frame.

People were feeling hope and wanted the “Change” immediately after the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. It was a special time in history for all Americans and the rest of the world. History will have an interesting time looking back and when it does – I believe that it will feel good about what happened inside those days. And the beat moves on.

Eli ReedEli Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00129836947823232959noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563939914405811110.post-27550272908010469872010-06-17T09:03:00.000-07:002010-06-18T07:16:10.611-07:00“Lost Boys to Hollywood”

“This show started with a phone call in 2001 from filmmaker Christopher Quinn asking me to accompany him with his film crew to the Kakuma UN refugee camp in northern Kenya, Africa. We met while working on a feature movie production in New York City. We worked together on the camera crew.
“This show is a dark reality of pain and suffering in a place existing on the other side of the world. They stand next to images made from my time working on Hollywood movies. These are two disparate points on the globe and they have come together here on the walls of the Perfect Exposure Gallery in Los Angeles.
“Hollywood creates the existence of a world that delivers a theatrical appearance of reality. Hollywood and its cast of characters that make up the film industry have a huge voice and the ability to expose different truths and provide a level of understanding about people, places and ideas. This ability both entertains us and can make us think and react as well in interesting ways that adds light and life to society. “It may be said in our present world’s distant future that the primary prevailing art form of this period of time may come from films both fictional and documentary. The past had artists such as DaVinci. Monet, Picasso, and even Norman Rockwell to inspire and lead us to a better place. From paint to film to digital and always in search of the story that brings light into the dark corners. “I had hoped that the photographs in this show would hopefully tell a story that would lead the viewer to walk inside places that they would otherwise never be able to see or know about. Capturing souls and stories that need telling offer opportunities to open our hearts.

“In my own way, I want to provide financial help for a medical clinic in Southern Sudan started by one of the Lost Boys who came to the USA in 2001. John Bul Dau did not forget his people. He was a leader then and he is a leader now. He started a foundation to help his people. It is my desire to raise money from the sale of my prints to help in this just cause. “Christopher Quinn’s invitation brought me to a particular place and to a awareness of people from Sudan who inspired me and whose plight demanded a commitment to show their dilemma.”

— Eli Reed, April 2008

The above text was written in 2008. I was hoping for an out pouring of positive movement coming out of the exhibit. Not much happened then but I believe progress is a slow walk to somewhere and I intend to be there when it arrives. The Lost Boys took a ‘Leap of Faith” to survive the horrors that most people cannot imagine. It was believable beauty that transcended my expectations. Once again it is said, woe to those attempting to describe the indescribable to the great unwashed. I am human and I needed this trip.
